On a couple different occasions, questions were asked about personal injury liability when MCPA grads are assisting the Medina Police Dept.

The Medina City Law Dept. has confirmed that you are covered for personal injury.

There are some conditions that apply:

  1. We need to be on duty for official Medina Police business.
  2. When we are on duty we need to be in uniform (blue MCPA shirt, khakis, id badges, cap)
  3. We need to strictly follow the instruction we receive from the Police Dept.
  4. Whenever we go out for any duty, a police officer will tell us exactly what the Department want us to do.

Here's an example.

On some of the things we do(like shoplift prevention), we are instructed to work in pairs. If one of us would decide to "go it alone" on shoplift prevention and something happens, the personal injury coverage may not kick in, since we were instructed to work in pairs.

For what it's worth, several years ago, several of us role-played "bad guys" for the  Medina SWAT team training. A few of us did get some minor bumps and bruises. The bumps and bruises were not serious, and no medical treatment was required.

Other than that, I'm 99% sure that there never have been any injuries.
Doesn't mean it can't happen.

If a confrontational situation should occur(fight, a citizen is not doing what you ask, etc.), WE DO NOT GET INVOLVED!!!  We always carry a cell phone, and if a difficult situation does occur, we stand back and call dispatch. This has rarely happened.
